Caption: The fact that you can see the beam in this picture means we've made progress in the lab. The light you see is scattered (reflected) off of atoms inside the vacuum chamber. Until the third week of April, we hadn't made it far enough to have atoms in the chamber. We spent a great deal of time making sure the laser beam was lined up well and that the level of vacuum was good. Much work remains to be done.
