Keith and I hiked Mt. Diablo east of San Francisco and Oakland over winter break 2000. It took us the better part of the afternoon to explore the area.
Diablo might not be very high (only about 4000 feet elevation). However, it has one of the most spectacular views in the world. It trails only Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa in terms of the land area one can view at once. Apparently, it is possible to see 2/3 of California on a clear day. That's impressive!
