Design feedback desired
So I've been toying with a new design for the pictures' section of my website. You can compare the two designs:
Nominally, the content of the two versions is exactly the same, but the layout is different. One big concern I have about the new version is that users with smaller screens may have to scroll horizontally (which is a big pain). Do you have any comments along these lines? How about any suggestions on what I might do to mitigate this problem?
I strove for a cleaner look with equal or better access to the information that was already there. Have I succeeded? What else can use tweaking?

You're just trying to get me to leave another comment, aren't you?
Yup, second one is definitely cleaner...
-Your album intros (and captions) get lost on the old design. If you still want them at the top (so no horiz scrolling), that's ok, but make use of background color, text size, text color etc (like you do in the new design) to highlight what you want readers to notice.
-I find it easier to have more photos on a page (vertically) and scroll a bit than to have many pages in a section - but that may be just me
-Could you have comments appear in the alt text when you hover your cursor over a photo instead of the image's title?
-What does 'index page' mean? And why can't you click on it?
Want more? ;-)
Ooh, nice feedback. Very specific and helpful.
I've gotten some comments via Facebook where I posted a similar query, but none were quite as directed. That's probably because none of the responders design for a living. ;)
I prefer the new horizontal layout, but am simply concerned about lower resolution screens out there. I don't want people to have to scroll horizontally. However, my site's stats tell me that only 6% of visitors in the past year have screens narrower than about 1000 pixels, so it's clearly not as much of an issue as it might have been even 5 years ago. I'm thinking of making an alternate, vertically-themed design if it's not too much work to make it consistent.
Having the alt text show up over the images is a good idea. Do you mean for this to occur on the index pages, the individual pages, or both?
I'll see what I can do with the template I'm using. I have limited control over how some things show up (and very good control over other things). I'm not willing to give up the software because it allows really easy generation/regeneration of galleries once I've tagged the photographs in question.
I think putting all the thumbnails on one page is doable. I'll do a mock up to see how it looks.
Thanks again for the help.
